Should you try a maximalist decorating approach?

Whether you’re currently redesigning a room in your home or you’re a sucker for home improvement and real estate, chances are you know what minimalism is. Essentially, designing and decorating with a minimalist approach is all about the idea that less is more. Neutral colors, sleek lines and just a few pieces of functional furniture are all you need to make this style work in your home.

On the other end of the spectrum, there’s maximalism. And it’s exactly what you’d expect. As interior designer Beth Diana Smith explained to The Washington Post, maximalism follows the concept that more is more.

It’s loud.
It’s rebellious.
It’s strong.
It’s bold.

It’s all about having fun with different colors, shapes, textures and patterns in a way that seamlessly comes together.

“Maximalism is about surrounding yourself with the things that you love,” Smith told the Washington Post. “It can be art, decor, furniture, anything at all, but it all boils down to layering those things beautifully together in a strategic way. For me, the goal is to always create a ‘wow’ factor.”

Are you interested in giving the maximalist approach a shot, but you’re not sure where to get started? Here are the basic elements you need to consider when bringing this style selection into your home:

Don’t be afraid to express yourself
Self-expression via home design and decor can be so much fun, but you have to be willing to step outside of your comfort zone to achieve the room of your dreams.

Interior designer Melissa Rufty told The Washington Post that taking the leap of faith is the first step in committing to maximalism design.

“It’s more of an attitude than it is an approach,” Rufty said. “And the reason people struggle with it is you have to check your intimidation at the door. You have to be brave and confident and know that, in this attitude, there is no self-expression that is wrong.”

Have fun with color and artwork
Maximalism is all about playing with color, and one obvious way to complete this job is with a new coat of paint. Have fun with a bold hue like plum, hot pink, lime green or deep blue, and accessorize with artwork in a variety of styles, sizes and frames.

Mix and match furniture
Don’t feel obligated to stick to one style of furniture as you normally would with a different style approach. Experiment with different patterns, colors and textures in your furniture — just make sure they flow together seamlessly.

Negative space is your friend
The last thing you want to do is create a space that’s cluttered. The idea of maximalism can feel a bit noisy, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be disorganized and uncomfortable. Negative space allows the room to breathe and gives certain pieces in the living space the opportunity to be the center of attention as a focal point. This could be as simple as painting an accent wall and leaving it bare. Of course, you should take advantage of the opportunity to choose a bold and exciting color.
